would you use a wagon for your dog? It’s hard for me being an active person while my senior pet dog is … not so active.

Can you relate?

I miss my canine workout buddy. My black lab mix Ace and I were running buddies for years, but today he can only go along for short, slow walks.

It sucks going for walks (and especially running) without my dog.

Sure, I run with my young pet dog Remy and I do, but I feel guilty leaving Ace behind all the time.

Of course, there are terrific things about having an older pet dog …

For example, our main activity is spooning on the floor enjoying TV. It’s what Ace and I do generally all weekend.

But still, I hate having to leave my old person behind all the time when I head out for walks.

What about using a STROLLER for an old dog?

I’ve seriously become that person where I’m thinking about either getting a stroller or wagon for my dog.

Ace is not small. He’s 70 pounds. Could you picture me pulling a Lab-sized pet dog in a wagon? ?

And yes, pet dog strollers do exist.

Dog stroller or wagon for old dogs on Amazon

I’m not sure which brand Poh’s wagon is, but I’ve found a few on Amazon that look similar. This is what I’m considering for Ace.

I don’t think I could bring myself to push my pet dog in a stroller mostly because of his size, but I think Ace and I could pull off a wagon.

I see these wagons and carts around. mostly they’re used by parents toting their kids’ stuff to the beach or wherever.

It says on Amazon it can hold up to 150 pounds. Ace is 70.

I’m not sure I would actually use this or if I’d be too embarrassed.

But walks with Ace are only about a mile or less these days. A wagon or cart would allow him to identify along a lot more often with Josh, Remy and I.

What is the best pet dog stroller?

There are actually a lot of pet dog strollers to choose from.

My favorite based on what I hear from others is the pet dog stroller from Gen7Pets.

You can see that it is durable, rugged and good quality, and it’s conveniently available on Amazon.

The Gen7Pets Pet Jogger Stroller is created to hold up to 75 pounds, so it could work for some large breed dogs. It is also able to hold two smaller dogs.

But honestly, opting for the basic wagon might be best for a large, senior dog. Some will hold up to 150 pounds.

Do any of you have a wagon or stroller for your dogs?

I have to say … living in San Diego, it’s not all that odd to see dogs in strollers. I see it probably at least every three weeks so it doesn’t faze me anymore.

I used to be like, “Josh, can you believe that?”

Now I’ve adapted to southern California.

Granted, it’s always a small pet dog in the stroller. But, you know.

Oh, and another thing with San Diego is we can walk (and pull a wagon) year round. Although, we do have hills.

Are pet dog strollers allowed in stores?

It depends on where you live. In a lot of cases, if the pet dog is quiet and calm a lot of store owners and customers will probably just look the other way or not even notice.

In San Diego, it was absolutely normal to see small dogs in strollers while shopping, especially in strip mall type buildings. It was also common to see dogs in public at outdoor restaurants, including dogs in strollers.

However, dogs are typically not allowed in grocery stores, even if they are in a stroller. If the sign says “no dogs allowed” then they are not allowed, even if they’re in a stroller.

Whether or not this is actually enforceable by law is another question. but it’s probably best to respect the service owner’s policy unless you have an actual service dog.

many people have asked how my dog Ace is doing. thank you for thinking of him.

Ace is doing OK.

He’s had an ongoing issue with a non-healing wound.

You can read some of the details here, but we are in the process of meeting with a second specialist and deciding whether to move forward with a CT scan and a second surgery.

I’m not looking for any advice but maybe just a little moral support. I also know I’m not the only one without answers to her dog’s medical issues. many others are in the same situation only with different issues and I want them to know they are not alone.

When I’m feeling this extreme stress about what decisions are best for my dog, one thing that helps is to take a step back and give myself the advice I give others when asked.

I’m a dog walker and dog blogger and you can think of the questions I get when it comes to the health of our pets and end-of-life decisions for them too.

“Am I doing the right thing?” people ask. “តើ​អ្នក​ចង់​ធ្វើអ្វី?”

And what I say to them is this:

“There is no right or wrong. You’re doing the best you can.”

So that’s what I’ve been telling myself with Ace.

You do the best you can.

All I can do is go with my best instincts, listen to our vets, discuss with my spouse and observe how Ace is doing. and consider financial limitations too.

Sometimes the right decisions are obvious.

Usually, they are not.

We’re comfortable with the decisions we’ve made so far, and I’m hoping to get some more answers soon. I’m hoping and praying (begging God, actually) that a second surgery will give Ace another year or two (or five!).

But I also want to be realistic about how much we want to put our almost 10-year-old dog through and how far we’re willing to go financially. There are no right answers here.

It’s heartbreaking.

What I could really use is your thoughts for Ace as we move forward with more appointments and decisions.

Ace’s issue does not seem to be life threatening at the moment (that we know of) but it is causing him some pain and discomfort. Our walks are slow and short and we spend a lot of time lounging around.

All your comments, emails and positive thoughts have meant a lot to me.

It’s overwhelming to think about how you’re going to socialize a new dog or puppy.

I created a list of different people, animals, situations, sights, sounds and experiences you may want to introduce to your pup.

It’s a huge list, but it’s not like you have to expose your puppy to everything.

Pick one or two new situations or experiences per week. It will help your puppy tremendously.

Try to think about your lifestyle and the situations you’d like your puppy to be comfortable with ideally.

I liked to take my old dog Ace on boat rides, for example, but this may not be something you plan to do with your dog.

Socialization is about slowly introducing the pup or dog to new things over time in a positive way. Don’t underestimate the power of hot dogs to help create positive associations!

So here’s my list. Please add your suggestions in the comments, because there’s no way I can think of everything myself.

Things to safely introduce to your puppy or new dog

1. introduce your puppy to different types of people

All types of “strangers” in general if you can. Women, men, seniors, teenagers, elementary-aged kids, pre-school kids, toddlers, babies, etc. The key: start taking your puppy for walks early. and make a point to drive to different parks and locations for walks.

2. introduce your puppy to different types of clothing

Sometimes different article of clothing can surprise a dog.

So try to introduce your puppy to people wearing backpacks, different types of hats, big coats, big sunglasses, uniforms, suits, boots, helmets, face masks, etc.

Also think about the different seasons. If you will take your dog out on cross country trails in the winter, they may be started by people on skis or people wearing goggles and face masks.

3. introduce your puppy to bikes, strollers, traffic, etc.

People in wheelchairs, people using crutches or walking with a cane, people pushing strollers, people on bikes or roller blades.

People walking at different speeds – runners, seniors moving stiffly and slowly, kids running and squealing, people running or biking with dogs, etc.

4. get your puppy used to seeing people holding tools

Shovels, rakes, weed-whackers, skis, oars, hiking poles, etc.

5. introduce your puppy to other animals

Cats, kittens, hamsters, ducks, chickens, horses, pet rabbits, any type of animal you think the pup might live with or be around later in life.

6. introduce your puppy to different surfaces

(Thanks for this tip, Colby!) Sand, rocks, gravel, pavement, slippery or shiny floors, wooden walkways, tiles, concrete, dirt, snow, grass, agility equipment.

7. get your puppy used to water

Swimming at the lake, the ocean, the river, plastic kiddie pool, playing with the hose, riding on a boat or floating on a raft, standing on a paddle board or sitting in a kayak, etc.

8. get your puppy used to grooming & handling

Being held or carried, having a bath, getting brushed & having nails trimmed, teeth brushed, having all body parts touched – feet, tail, nails, toes, ears, face, teeth.

9. get your puppy used to riding in the car

Going through a car wash, going through a drive-thru window, driving by lots of pedestrian traffic such as school parking lots, etc. See my friend Dawn’s tips on getting a dog used to the car.

10. introduce your puppy to riding in a boat

Or standing on a dock, fishing or watching boats.

11. introduce your puppy to a lot of other dogs

Dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds on and off leash, including other puppies. I highly recommend obedience or puppy socialization classes.

12. gradually expose your puppy to loud noises

You don’t want to scare your puppy, but I would start introducing your puppy to loud noises from a distance and then slowly move closer over a few weeks. things like trucks, trains, tractors, snowmobiles, motorcycles, school buses, lawnmowers, gun shots, fireworks. Our lab breeder suggests doing a gun intro at around 5-6 months for lab puppies and to do so very gradually, from a distance.

13. expose your puppy to loud indoor noises

Vacuum, blender, loud TV like football games, smoke alarms, musical instruments. Also, just loud people! like friends who yell at the TV during football games.

14. get your puppy used to being in a crowd

Examples could be a softball games, watching people run a 5K, parades, fairs, a gathering of friends, a family reunion, etc.

15. think about places to viអង្គុយជាមួយកូនឆ្កែរបស់អ្នក

A common problem, right?

I haven’t made much progress, because I haven’t made the effort to follow through with my training goals.

Instead of using a choke/slip collar and carrying treats as planned, I’ve been falling back on the gentle Leader. I love the gentle Leader, but it basically allows my dog to pull while minimizing the effects of pulling so I can “check out” on training. It’s terrific for when I take Ace to stores or busy events. It’s not terrific for when I’m working on training in the neighborhood.

So, I’ve decided to recommit to my original goals:

Use a prong collar. I’ve decided that works better than our cheap, heavy choke collar Ace is wearing in the photo below.

Carry treats.

Keep enough distance from other dogs so I can reward good behavior.

Slowly increase the challenges.

To do this, I always have treats in my coat pocket ahead of time so they’re always there. otherwise it’s too easy for me to skip the treats.

I’ve also cut my dog’s daily food back by about 1/6 so the extra treats won’t cause weight gain. This will also keep him more interested in treats since he won’t be too full. He’s pretty treat motivated, but it always helps to train when the dog is looking for a meal!

The reason I like the prong collar is because it feels like a regular collar to my dog (vs. having something over his nose with the gentle Leader).

When we pass other dogs, I keep the leash loose (no tension) so my dog can make the choice on how to respond. I use the command “watch” while luring him with a treat. If that doesn’t work, I give him a light tug on the prong collar followed by a “good boy!” and a treat when he looks at me.

It’s very basic training, and it works well for us when I follow through. This is how I trained by dog when I first got him.

I also like the prong collar because I can switch the leash back and forth between the prong collar and the nylon collar and my dog won’t even notice. The goal is to get to the point where he doesn’t need the prong collar.

I’m hoping if we work on this each day for about a month, I will notice significant improvements.
