non-aggressive responses to rude behaviour (both human and animal)

a default “leave it” behaviour

well-mannered

safe around the general public

not viewed as an undue burden in places of business

generally unobtrusive

a desire to work with humans

Building on the foundation of the innate traits bred into the dogs, puppy raisers and trainers add the specific cues and trained behaviors to get a working guide dog.

See our post: how to become a guide dog puppy raiser

What commands do guide dogs learn?

Instructors at a formal training program usually teach such skills as:

turning left

ខាងស្ដាម

halt

forward

targeting curbs

straight line travel

Another important concept is: “the perfect balance between responding to cues but also being willing to tell the handler no.”

This intelligent disobedience can be a literal life saver if the handler makes a mistake and asks the dog to lead them forward into traffic or off a train platform.

Matching a guide dog with a handler

An important part of helping a guide dog to be successful is also the match with the handler. Katrin explains that the training program labelled Tom as a city dog who would thrive in more active, intense, ever-changing city working environments.

While Tom is responsible for helping Katrin, she also is responsible for him. “When my guide dog is in his harness, he’s working. Our relationship and navigating need to take top priority for us both. If he or I are distracted we both could end up injured or worse.”

Katrin and Tom encounter challenges every day. “When Tom moves a certain way I know there is another dog or person nearby that he doesn’t want anything to do with, and it’s my job to believe him and ensure he feels safe and heard,” she explains.

“My guide dog and our relationship are too valuable to be ruined by a poorly managed aggressive or rude dog or person. My ability to move safely and as freely as possible in the world depends so much on our partnership. plus I love my dog too much to want him to be in a position where he feels unsafe.”

Katrin shares that numerous guide dogs have to be retired after being attacked by another dog or due to the stress from being repeatedly barked and lunged at by poorly managed dogs.

While other dogs can be difficult—and even dangerous—people can be equally challenging.

She offers an analogy to help understand her situation, “If you see a guide dog team out in the real world, please be respectful. I tell folks ‘imagine it’s not a dog but a wheelchair.  would you pet, grab or talk to a wheelchair? No? then please don’t do it to a working guide dog. The team’s safety depends on it.’”

She also encounters people who don’t understand the work that Tom does.

“Sometimes people say, ‘Oh I wish I could bring my dog everywhere too!’ and I generally want to reality check [and say], ‘So you’d like everything that goes along with visual impairment and disability too?’” she says.

When do guide dogs retire?

Eight years into her partnership with Tom, Katrin is very proud of their bond. She says, “He’s continuing to tell me he enjoys being a guide dog still and he continues to be good at it.” When Tom retires, he will live the rest of his life with Katrin.

Guide dogs retire due to old age, medical issues, behavioral concerns or other reasons.

Katrin emphasizes that everyone involved with the dog, “from the person with disability to the program to the puppy raisers” work together to ensure the dog is taken care of for life in a loving home.

Have any of you had to change your routine a bit for your senior dogs?

How to stop A Dog’s Barking

Hey, guess what? Dogs bark!

Their barking has helped people for thousands of years by alerting us to intruders. Barking is their job!

But … today, a dog’s barking can certainly be a bit of a nuisance, especially if you’re starting to get complaints from neighbors, a landlord or roommates.

Heck, the barking is probably annoying YOU too!

So today I’m going ot share some tips on how to stop a dog’s indoor barking.

5 suggestions to stop a dog’s indoor barking

1. try to figure out why he’s barking.

People always say, how do I stop my canine from barking? Well, it depends on why he’s barking in the first place. If your canine barks & you’re not sure why, leave a comment below and I’ll help you brainstorm.

Could it be …

A worry of being alone? A negative association with being in a crate? Boredom? Reacting to noises or things he sees outside?

Or maybe he’s not getting enough interaction, physical exercise or training?

Does he have certain “triggers” like people walking by in the hall of your apartment, dogs walking by outside or maybe just you picking up your keys to leave makes him anxious?

2. change his environment.

Sometimes the barking is a practice and if you change the dog’s environment or routine a bit, you can take away his typical “triggers” and stop or decrease the barking.

For example, if his barking is triggered by people walking by the window, block him from the window by leaving him in another room or possibly a kennel/crate or even just closing the blinds.

If noises set off his barking, can you block some of the noise by leaving a TV on, music or a loud fan?

How about simply moving his kennel/crate to a different room?

3. double his exercise.

Increasing a dog’s exercise will not resolve a dog’s behavioral problems but it sure does help. If your canine has the energy to bark all day, I’m guessing he’s not getting enough exercise.

I’ve had people tell me, “We walked a mile today, and he’s still not tired.”

One mile?

Try five miles, with a canine backpack and some running. and then do another mile or two in the evening.

I realize not everyone has the time for this. I realize others are not physically capable of that kind of movement.

But you just have to find a way to offer exercise. You just have to.

If you can’t afford canine daycare or a canine walker, then I’m scared you’re going to have to get up early and exercise your canine for 90 minutes before work and another hour in the evening.

If you physically can’t walk or run, then you’re going to have to drive to the canine park every day or pay a canine walker.

Or maybe you’re broke, physically disabled and working overtime with four kids, but you still have to find a way! ?

4. find ways to work your dog’s mind.

Working your dog’s mind by offering him with training, new experiences and challenges is just as essential as physical exercise.

Dogs are intelligent and emotional creatures, and they get a bit crazy and frustrated if they have nothing to do!

Here are some easy ideas for offering games and challenges for your dog:

These really awesome canine puzzles by Nina Ottosson!

Feeding his meals in Kongs

Taking him to a training class once a week such as obedience, agility, etc.

Attending canine daycare or going for walks with a canine walker

Wearing a canine backpack

Teaching a new trick and practicing for 10 mins a day

Playing games like fetch and tug

Teaching your canine to sit, climb on or crawl under different obstacles

5. use an anti-bark collar.

I mention this last because it’s not fair to use a bark collar if your dog’s needs are not being met. (Also, I wouldn’t use an anti-bark collar on a fearful/nervous dog.)

However, if you’re offering your canine with plenty of interaction, exercise and training every day and he’s still barking, then in some cases an anti-bark collar is a good service for certain dogs.

I’m planning a post soon specifically about anti-bark collars and whether or not they’re best for different situations. If you have any questions about bark collars, leave them in the comments below.

Natural, organic treats for dogs, plus 3 giveaways!

Note: This is a sponsored post. read more to learn how you can win one of three bags of ORGANIX Jerky Chip Cookies for your dog.

Castor & Pollux natural Petworks recently introduced a new organic dog treat.

My dog Ace got to sample the ORGANIX Jerky Chip Cookies, and we’re offering you three ways to win a bag of cookies for your pup.

First, we’ll let you know a bit more about these cookies so you’ll know if they’re right for your dog.

More about the new ORGANIX Jerky Chip Cookies

ORGANIX Jerky Chip Cookies are oven baked with organic oatmeal and protein-rich jerky chips from salmon, beef liver, lamb or organic chicken, according to Castor & Pollux’s web site.

The cookies are also made with organic fruits and veggies, according to the web site. They do not include corn, soy or wheat.

“What’s more, our cookies are made in the USA and don’t include ingredients from China,” said Todd Martin, vice president of sales and marketing for Castor & Pollux, in a press release.

“They’re as good as homemade … but for dogs,” the company said in the press release.

According to Castor & Pollux, the cookies:

1. Come in four flavors – salmon, beef liver, lamb or organic chicken.

2. Can be used for training, good behavior or because your dog has mastered “the look” ?

3. Are breakable.

4. Are available at 400 PetSmart locations and select online retailers. The suggested retail price is $7.99 per 10-ounce bag.

I’d also like to add that they’re made with real, recognizable and pronounceable ingredients.

Are these natural dog treats right for your dog?

I think most dogs will love these treats, but if you prefer not to feed your dog whole grains, you may be interested in checking out some of the grain-free treat options from Castor & Pollux.

And, since these are cookies, they are somewhat large and crumbly. They’re easy to break up into little pieces, but not without a few crumbs.

What do you look for in a healthy dog treat?

Teach children to be safe around dogs

I don’t have my own kids (just a needy mutt and a very prissy cat), but I bring up the issue of children and dogs because there are so numerous preschool and grade school aged kids in my house complex. They have no worry or respect for animals. They certainly have dogs of their own and run up to any dog, sticking their faces in the dog’s face.

According to dogbitelaw.com, 77 percent of dog-bite injuries to children are to the face. the most frequent attacks in the united states are to young boys between the ages of 6 and 9, with the odds of a child being the bite victim at 3.2 to 1.

Kids need to know how to act around dogs. They need to know all dogs are not friendly and some will bite. They also need to know even their own dogs can bite. When a child under age 4 is bitten, the family canine is the attacker 47% of the time, according to dogbitelaw.com. Ninety percent of these attacks occur in the family’s home.

Things children ought to know about how to act around dogs:

1. remain calm around dogs.
Children ought to be taught not to yell or scream around a canine and to relocation slowly. excitement could scare a dog. and all that extra energy will put the canine in a highly energetic state, too. This is when problems happen. Either the canine will get excited, jump on the child, unintentionally push the child over or bite if the canine is aggressive or playing too roughly. have you ever had a group of children running towards you and your canine screaming, “Look! សត្វឆ្កែំមួយក្បាល!” I know I have.

2. always ask the owner before touching a dog.
Some dogs just aren’t friendly, and children ought to be taught never to assume otherwise.

3. Do not put your face near a dog. This is a hard one for kids because they are closer to eye level with dogs, especially big dogs. much more children are bitten in the face than adults for this reason. Fortunately, many dogs are much more likely to give a child kisses than a bite, but in some cases even playful licking can turn into a nip.

4. Don’t make eye contact with a dog.Animals in some cases interpret eye contact as a challenge, making them much more likely to act out with either dominant or fearful aggression.

5. Leave a canine alone while it is eating. Many times it is the child’s responsibility to feed the family pets. This might be OK, as long as the child understands not to bother the canine after she has her food.

6. Leave a canine alone if she is sleeping.A canine can easily become startled if she is all of a sudden woken up. The initial reaction is in some cases to nip.

7. little dogs can bite, too.
In my experience, little dogs are actually much more likely to bite than a big dog. It’s just that the injury will not be as severe. children ought to be aware that little dogs may be cute, but they are often aggressive.

8. Don’t run away from a dog.
Running from a canine will only bring out its instincts to chase. Instead, children ought to know it’s better to slowly back away from a dog.

Can you think of anything else children ought to be aware of? Do you have any bad experiences with children and dogs?

Goodbye, Goodbye – losing two animals

“For nearly their whole lives, we try to hold them back, try to stop their pulling.
Then, in their final years, we just wish they’d pull, pull again.” – Me

…….

Friday night we lost two family members. Both our mutt Ace and our cat Beamer died.

One week ago, I could not have thought of I would lose either of them, let alone both.

Beamer was sick all of last week, so sick that he turned down bacon and baked salmon! We found out he had advanced kidney disease, and on Friday we chose to have him euthanized.

Ace was having a good, normal day. However, about an hour after we got home from Beamer’s appointment, Ace walked over to the corner of our living room. I discovered him lying there, unable to get up, and Josh and I were both there while he died fairly quickly. We think he must’ve had a stroke or a heart attack.

At first, I was shocked to lose them both at once. Now, I think it’s special they went out together.

So what do I say when there are no words?

I cry into the take on of my remaining dog. He’s never experienced these kinds of sobs. I hold my cat Scout to my chest; he’s one of our “originals.”

They seem to be doing OK. animals relocation on and live in the moment. but they, too, have lost their companions and routine. They both looked up to their “big brothers.”

And now I wonder, how will I go on without Ace?

Sunday morning, Josh and I got up early and drove to the trail, to continue some kind of “normalcy.”

We ran 7 miles up the mountain—an average long run for us—but the heat and mental exhaustion made it extra difficult. I shuffled, one foot in front of the other, and made the 7 miles back down.

That is how life will be for a while. One foot in front of the other.

Thank you, sweet Ace. I will of course write much more to honor my young boy when I can find the words.

Our pack of four

……

This week, I will many likely be posting the blog articles that were written and scheduled before Ace died. Thursday, I have a fun giveaway/review post scheduled.

We also have an exciting company announcement to make next week. I always thought Ace would be around for this announcement, but he helped us get where we’re going.

Thank you, Ace. You’re a good boy.
